Dropbox for Creative People

As someone who works on multiple computers on any given day, Dropbox has been an absolute life saver. Even if you don’t use multiple computers, more than likely you use a computer and have a cell phone. The best use for my dropbox is being able to work on a project file from any computer. If I save a file I’m working on with the assets in the same folder, I can open up that file and re-save it from any computer at any time. I did this for a long time when I was building and rigging 2D characters in After effects for a couple short videos I was making, (If you are Interested)

Doing this made it really efficient for me to work on these projects by myself because I could continue working on them while at my day job or any place I could find internet. Now this is just a small part of it. When you get started up with dropbox you get around 2 free Gigs of space. Well when working on projects with creative people, 2 Gigs can get filled up quick, so I looked into upgrading for $9.99 a month, (your basic Netflix subscription), you get 1 Terabyte of space! That’s an insane amount of space and you should never worry about filling it up.

Now that you have tons of space you can start collaborating with people, there are other alternatives to dropbox, but for $10, a Terabyte of space, and tons of integration with other services you can’t beat it. you can start by creating a folder called “Collaboration with John” and share it with that person’s email and you are set. You can share text documents with ideas or pictures that reference your ideas. Really you can share whatever you want with them and when your done you can delete it.

This is really just the tip of the iceberg with Dropbox, I have tons of folders that I have divided up that hold things like “Scripts” “Film Ideas” “Screenshots” “After Effects Projects” you name it, I have a folder for it. So once you get the Dropbox app on your phone you now have access to all of this stuff ANYWHERE.

How awesome is that? lets say you have an idea for a film or a project and you want to share it with another person, you can take pictures and upload it straight to Dropbox for the other person to see. One of my favorite uses for Dropbox is with scripts. You never know when an idea will pop into your head. Most mobile script writing apps such as Celtx or Scriptly pro have an export to Dropbox function so you can literally import and export from your app to your Dropbox and then access it on your desktop later on.

Tools like Dropbox are very powerful and once you start thinking outside of the box, these things can be a great tool in anything you are doing.
